I can’t teach you anything

Then said a teacher, “Speak to us of Teaching.”
And he said:
No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.
The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.
If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind…

– Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

(It goes on from there but you get the gist.)

As a modern Wise Woman, I might switch out some pronouns and add “and heart” to that last sentence: “… but rather leads you to the threshold of you own mind and heart.” Other than that, I’d say Kahlil’s right on.

Here’s what’s true, without a shadow of a doubt: I can’t teach you anything.

The only thing I can do is to give you vast, open space and a reflective surface. (I like water imagery for that part. Let’s go with a still, deep, pristine lake.) Surrounded by love, and profound faith that everything’s okay.

The vast, open space affords you enough room for the unfolding of your own truth. That truth includes your knowledge, your deep, abiding wisdom, your stories, and the answers that are so close and so new you don’t dare try to give them words just yet.

The still, deep and pristine lake is your mirror. Peer in with your hesitations, your doubts, your questions that seem so dumb you can only bear to whisper them – and prepare to be stunned by what you see and hear reflected back. That’s YOU; it’s yours. It’s been in you all along.

When you look up again, the vast, open space has enough room for your new knowledge, even more questions, and more near-answers that arise from your stunned realization.

And yet all of this vast space is surrounded – held – warmly. You won’t get lost in here on this journey to your own truth. Never gonna happen. Promise.

I can’t teach you anything.

But I can make the introduction to the only one who can. I call her The Wise Woman – you might call her True Self, or your Source Connection… or Lou-Ann. 😉 And I believe that she’s not only within you – she IS you.

Have you forgotten her? Don’t worry, most of us have. And she’s the forgiving type, so it’s all good.

I can’t teach you anything.

But I can help you cultivate and nourish and grow and deepen your relationship with her. (And be your counselor when shit gets too real. That’s the nature of intimate relationships – they get really uncomfortable at the tipping points of growth. Of course you knew that already.)

I can’t teach you anything.

Nor can anyone else… except, of course, for YOU.
